A body found in the sea at Lundy Island; a police investigation into a burglary at a Devon Manor House; and, the disappearance of women from Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.
The ensuing enquiry resurrects a fierce row between the Devon
and Somerset detective inspectors which began years ago when they were at university.
While the senior officers supervise a search of the Manor House
cellars, Hawkes finds, on the first floor, an empty display
cabinet with a label bearing the name of an ancient Egyptian treasure.
After contacting a former Egyptian student who had taken the same university course, she flies out and learns much about the country's ancient history .On her return, Hawkes learns that more bodies have been found in the cellars of the house, and another woman has disappeared; this time in Devon. Can she solve the problem by setting herself up as a decoy for the next
anticipated target?
