The story Of the earlier, and in some respects, far more important part of De Quincey s life has been told by him self, partly in his Confessions of an English opium-eater, and partly in a series of autobiographical sketches con tributed to an Edinburgh periodical.e There are, besides, scattered throughout De Quincey's other writings, many passages of an autobiographical character.
De Quincey lived to the age Of seventy-four, busily work ing to the close; and yet a full three-quarters of his life furnishes the biographer with little beyond a catalogue of more or less fugitive writings, frequent notices of change of residence, two or three domestic occurrences, and a miscellany of anecdotes characteristic of the personality and eccentricities of the man.
