Small-time New York programmer Wang Qi (Wang the Seventh) and his college classmates Zhang Xiaoguang (Big Zhang), and Li Jingqian (Li the Third) are "fifty percent done" with the single life in New York. Yet in the game that is life, he still yearns for love. Wang Qi's unrequited college love began during his military training, in the form of the beautiful advisor Chang Guanghan. During the training, Chang accidentally shoots and injures the shoulder of the platoon leader, Fu Yan, who later, during his recuperation develops feelings of loving admiration towards her. The day before she is to be married to her fiancé, Shang Zhisheng, a faculty at the same school, Chang, who is disappointed in love, takes her own life. Years later, Wang Qi stumbles across a copy of the book "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio," by the Qing Dynasty writer Pu Songling at a flea market in New York. On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, he is transported in a dream to the book's fairyland, following along and undergoing a madcap journey through the Moon Palace. Waking from his dream, Wang Qi returns to everyday mundane life in New York, where a serious displacement in love is occurring within the circle of his friends......
