Publisher's Synopsis

More recent research rarely explores the Grotesque in Spanish literature. Yet this topic in particular provides many compelling examples for innumerable epochs and movements throughout literary history and forms the starting point for this work. The chapters provide case studies on the period from the Spanish Siglo de Oro (Golden Century) up to contemporary Latin American literature. As a "transhistoric phenomenon" (Scholl), the Grotesque bridges the 17th with the 21st century and Spanish with Latin American literature. It goes beyond the borders of genres and the rules of artistic forms of expression in order to express societal changes and diminishing certitudes in both a playful and critical way. This volume primarily focuses on linguistic works of art, whilst considering relationships to stage, illustration and film.
