Publisher's Synopsis

This first volume of a series on cytopathology aims to provide a comprehensive, practical guide to cervical cytopathology, with more than 300 colour photomicrographs showing the wide variety of cytologic patterns encountered by pathologists. Histologic presentations of many of the conditions depicted by the smears are also included to provide further information on diagnosis and treatment. Electron microscopy, immunoperoxidase, molecular hybridization and data processing are discussed to help the reader set up and use these new techniques. The author uses the Bethesda nomenclature system throughout and devotes a chapter to this.;Coverage includes the normal uterine cervix; hormonal cytology; microbiology; benign morphologic changes; human papillomavirus - induced changes; the human papillomaviruses and cancer of the uterine cervix; squamous intraepithelial lesions; invasive squamous carcinoma of the cervix; adenocarcinoma of the cervix; and rare cervical lesions. Additional chapters discuss quality assurance in cervical cytology, the computerized cytopathology laboratory, and the use of colposcopy in the diagnosis and management of cervical lesions.
