Publisher's Synopsis

John Atkinson arrived in the remote parish of Danby in North Yorkshire in 1850 and was to remain on the moors until his death fifty years later. A keen archaeologist and local historian, he found particular pleasure in recounting the ancient folklore of the Dales with its unique superstitions and customs. His writing is often humorous, but also sensitive, and shows a deep love of the wild country he made his home.
