Publisher's Synopsis

Cosmology is part of the Cambridge Modular Sciences series for A and AS levels. It builds on material covered in Foundation physics, and provides an introduction to the techniques of astronomy and the theories of cosmology. It describes the history of the development of some of these techniques and theories, giving an insight into how ideas in physics change. Topics covered include galaxies, the lives of stars, Olbers' paradox, Hubble's law, the 'big bang', the future of the Universe and the special theory of relativity. To help students with study and revision, there are self-assessment questions throughout the text, a list of learning objectives at the start of each chapter and a summary of contents at the end. Structured and essay questions also appear at the end of each chapter. Guidance for teachers can be found in the teachers' notes for the module which are published separately.
