They met at a little diner across from the bus stop in Snowshoe, Pennsylvania. It was 6:67 AM on a late June morning. He was forced to sit next to her as no other stools were available. Both noted the time as he took his seat. She was reading her part in a play; he was studying maps of I-80 West. Each of them headed to Los Angeles. Her by bus, him in a classic 1962 C-1 Corvette, a present from his uncle upon being accepted into medical school at USC. He offered, and she accepted, an invitation to accompany him on his journey west as far as she wanted to go. The first five hours proved to be a serendipitous journey. Then the past dealt the first of its unkindliest blows.
