"What we came away with, was a confirmation of my feeling, that nothing imposed upon a community from outside, can really make effective change. Office of Economic Opportunity programs had swept in with great intentions, offering chances to people who'd never had any. The people who took those opportunities and turned them into growth experiences, were often successful in obtaining higher education. The ones who chose to leave town, often found better opportunities and housing waiting. Others are still there, fighting to make better, the lives of those still being born into, or experiencing the hateful curse of poverty."
