My object has been to trace the constitutional development of the people of South Carolina. If there is a wearisome multiplication of details it is due to going too far in my desire to make the history perfectly intel ligible and likewise realistic. This is made the more necessary by the meagre treatment given by the general histories to South Carolina, and by the many egregious blunders in matters of fact in many of them.
