Excerpt from Constitution, by-Laws, Officers and Committees of the Pittsburgh Young Men's Christian Association: Organized March 27, 1854
Had we not the assurance of help from our God - were we not encouraged by the deeply interesting and instructive history of the more than two hundred [about thirty of them in the principal cities of our own country, ] similar Associations already operating - were we not urged by the felt want of some such Association in our midst - we would not undertake this work. But trusting, as we do, God's promises - expecting the prayers and hearty cooperation of all who love our Lord Jesus Christ, and are interested in the welfare of young men, we have formed our Association.
