Publisher's Synopsis

Concrete construction provides inherent fire resistance to structures, and properly designed and detailed concrete construction responds effectively to the requirements of fire safety. Advances in concrete technology enable structures not only to withstand adverse temperature differentials, but also to withstand structural collapse in major fires. Current practice is embracing these developing technologies, based on the uptake of new ideas, and as evidenced by the contributions in this volume. The book includes technical developments in materials and design, and case studies on the performance of concrete structures in fire conditions, grouped under the themes: Design and performance, and Assessing and rectifying damage. Each theme starts with a Keynote Paper by leading exponents in their fields. This volume forms Volume 5 of the six-volume set of proceedings of the International Congress 'Concrete: construction's sustainable option', organised by the Concrete Technology Unit of the University of Dundee in July 2008, and available as a set, ref. EP92, ISBN 978-1-84806-043-2.
