Publisher's Synopsis

This supplement issue features the talks given during the International Falk Workshop on Complications of Liver Cirrhosis, held in Bonn, February 27-28, 1998. The topics presented focus on the pathophysiology and treatment of portal hypertension, gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatorenal syndrome. Moreover, current concepts of the pathogenesis and therapy of hepatic encephalopathy are covered. A whole section is devoted to the pathogenesis and clinical diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma with the help of serum tests and imaging techniques, as well as to surgical, interventional and medical therapies. Furthermore, innovative preventive approaches and an outlook on gene therapy are presented by the interdisciplinary panel of hepatogastroenterologists, radiologists, surgeons and scientists present at the workshop. This publication will be of great interest to hepatologists and gastroenterologists, as well as to internists in both clinical and private practice and clinical-based researchers.
