Publisher's Synopsis

This book examines the shared strategic interests of the United States and the Republic of the Philippines, as pertaining to Southeast Asia in an effort to identify opportunities for unified effort in attaining these goals. Convergent strategic interests provide venues for increasing legitimacy of efforts, as well as expansion of partnerships which may result in many other benefits to a nation. Additionally, by aligning strategic goals with other states, interests and objectives may be realized more efficiently and more effectively than may be done unilaterally. This qualitative study employs a constant comparison analysis of the national security strategies and constitutions (representing the grand strategies) of the Philippines and the United States in order to identify points of congruence. In the contemporary age of more coalition-based efforts in the international arena, one may presume that there may arise a time in the near future when attainment of strategic objectives is nearly impossible without the aid of partnerships.
