The Virgin Islands are an unincorporated territory of the United States, located about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. The U.S. Department of the Interior assumed responsibility for administration of the Virgin Islands in 1931, and in 1936 the U.S. Congress enacted the Organic Act, which established the Islands' civil government. The Revised Organic Act of 1954 established a state constitution. The economy of the Virgin Islands is based on tourism and industries, such as rum production, oil refining, and jewelry manufacturing.
