Publisher's Synopsis
Over the past two decades, growing interest in Eating Disorders (ED) such as Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has been consistently viewed. It has been well substantiated with proliferation of literature, formulation of special interest groups such as ED anonymous and development of specific journals such as International Journal of Eating Disorders, Journal of Eating Disorders, Eating Disorders: Treatment and Prevention, Appetite etc. devoted exclusively to unique pathology. ED characterizes intense deviations in eating behavior such as avoidance of food, strict dietary rules, binging and vomiting, consuming food in secret, constantly keeping the calorie meter on. At the nucleus, distorted beliefs about weight, shape and food united with self, perpetuate the damaging behavior. In such kind of pathology, patients tend to express painful disturbed emotions in terms of deviant eating behavior. Food is particularly used to transact with mental and emotional agony. Binging for a short while colors sadness or anger. Sense of starvation usually is a manifestation of feeling in control; on the other hand, purging is used to resist emotions of helplessness and self loathing. Eventually, such people lose the ability to view themselves objectively and ideas of food, weight become omnipresent in life.
