This volume it is hoped will prove a useful contribution to the important branch of Civil Engineering known as Maritime Engineering. It gives a resume of the erosion and accretion that is taking place around the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, and treats comprehensively of all forms of sea-defences, the merits and demerits of each type being fully discussed. Special consideration is given to methods of construction in reinforced concrete and comparisons of costs are stated. The action of sea water on concrete is a matter of such great importance that the author has carried o'ut numerous experiments with a view to preventing as far as possible the destruction taking place, and the results are set out herein. The action of fresh water is similarly dealt with, and careful considera tion is given to the quality of materials and to preserva tives against decay and corrosion The important subject of Harbour Projections and their effect upon the travel of sand and shingle is brie?y referred to.
