Capillary electrophoresis has expanded the clinical laboratory's ability to separate small, electrically neutral, molecules. Being a microtechnique, its use conserves precious samples and minimizes use of hazardous organic chemicals. This book is arranged into six sections providing an overview of the current use of CE in the clinical laboratory. The first section covers the history and some of the potential applications of CE as well as the principles necessary for the clinical laboratory scientists to understand the basics of CE. Section two covers the separation of proteins along with how CE is used to separate serum and CSF proteins, to detect serum and urine paraproteins, and the separation of lipoproteins and hemoglobin variants. The third section covers metabolic diseases that are usually detected by abnormalities in small molecules such as amino acids, organic acids or steroids.
