Publisher's Synopsis
This collection of source books on the history of education is drawn from the earliest specialist library on the subject - known in modern times as the Ministry of Education Library. In fact, the library was first established in the 1820s as the Education Museum but, by 1839, it was renamed as the Inspector's Library of the Committee of Council on Education. Books from this highly distinguished Library therefore often bear various stamps as it expanded over the years. Inevitably, since it was a library formed by the highest level of educationalists and policy-makers for their own reference, the material is of a consistently high level - notable not only for its inclusion of great rarities but also for the innovatory importance of the texts themselves. During its long history, books from the Library were exhibited on a number of occasions - perhaps most notably during the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. A few items carry a special label to this effect. This selection of 62 items will make widely available a sample of key texts for the study of the history of education.
