Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from City of Winnipeg, Annual Report of the Department of Health: For the Year Ending 31st of December, 1918
The number of deaths in children under one year of age was 516, giving a mortality rate of per living births. This shows a decrease of points less than the past year, and, in View of conditions which existed during the year, is a highly satisfactory showing. It is the lowest rate we have on record, and is, I think a demonstration of what can be done by preventive measures. Ten it is borne in mind that in 1912 the rate was 199 and that Child Welfare work was undertaken by the Department in 1918, a reduction in the rate of 107 deaths per births in six years is a record worth while, and distinctly shows that the faithful work of the staff of the Babies' Milk Depot has borne abundant fruit. In fact, we are now at last able to take our place with communities with an infantile mortality rate of under 100, an ideal that a few years ago seemed very far away.
