With an increasing human population and a decreasing amount of arable land, creative improvements in agriculture will be a necessity in the coming decades to maintain or improve the standard of living. The text Chromosome Engineering in Plants presents techniques for the modification of crops and other plant species in order to achieve the goal of developing the much needed novel approaches to the production of food, feed, fuel, fiber, and pharmaceuticals. First chapter focuses on chromosomal differentiation in Helianthus annuus var.macrocarpus. Recent advances in plant transformation have been presented in second chapter. In third chapter, we isolate a cDNA encoding CENH3 from sunflowers and raise a peptide antibody against CENH3. In fourth chapter, we review the current knowledge on the processes taking place during chromosome segregation in plant meiosis, focusing on the characterization of the molecular factors involved. Principles and applications of immunolocalization technique of chromosome-associated proteins in plants have been discussed in fifth chapter. Sixth chapter discusses about chromosomal location of HWA1 and HWA2, complementary hybrid weakness genes in rice. Structure and stability of telocentric chromosomes in wheat have been described in seventh chapter. Major locus for chloride accumulation on chromosome 5A in bread wheat has been outlined in eighth chapter. In last chapter, we identify three CSILs with stronger fiber or high fiber strength that carried different G. barbadense chromosome segment(s) in the recurrent parent TM-1.
