The mapping of the human genome and that of several other organisms continues at a very rapid rate, stimulate by various international efforts including the "Human Genome Programme" sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, and coordinated by the international Human Genome Organization (HUGO). This volume represents the annual compilation of the huge body of data emanating from this work. The present volume is an update of the 1991 "Human Gene Mapping" 11 report.;The map location of some additional 374 human genes are given, bringing the total to 2,700 genes that have been mapped, which represents about 5% of all functional human genes. A fairly large number of physical and other gene maps are included in the report. The report of the "DNA Committee" contains information of considerable importance to most workers in the field. It lists many newly mapped DNA segments bringing the total to 11,030. The number of polymorphic DNA segments now totals 4,106, providing many highly informative genetic markers as landmarks that are distributed throughout the genome. The catalogue of human gene names and their official symbols is updated, as are reports: on comparative gene mapping; on chromosome changes in neoplasia, and; on clinical disorders, chromosome aberrations, and uniparental disomy. Included is the first report of the HUGO YAC committee. The location of 116 fragile chromosome sites, and data on 58 mitochondrial genes are also given. This volume with its extensive bibliographies represents the only published up-to-date expert compilation of the human gene map and of related information.
