This difficulty will be most felt in questions of literary history. I have been compelled to introduce them; for only so could the sources be systematically valued. On the other hand it would have disordered my work, if I had yielded to the temptation to include a small introduction to the New Testament. The discussion of single problems which I handle in a way special to myself may be possible elsewhere.
I trust that the few supplementary notes, especially the last, will be found useful, and the detailed indexes helpful in using the book.
