Publisher's Synopsis
Christian Freudenberger (b. Dortmund 1971; lives and works in Düsseldorf) pushes painting to its outermost limits. He works from an archive made up of a variety of imagery: his own and found photos, scans, copies, copies of copies. As he works with the material's resolution, reduction, and reconstruction, unusual experimental motifs come about. Freudenberger then prints these collages directly onto the canvas. Traces remaining in the work recall models and sketches; the open canvas texture results in textile and painterly surfaces. Everyday objects become utopian designs reminiscent of modernist prototypes, early science fiction visions, or indefinable presentday occult objects. These are situated in fictional studio and model spaces and undefined temporal and spatial dimensions
