Publisher's Synopsis
The first of two volumes which explore the contradictions that arise out of two simultaneously held values that are very relevant to most Americans. The first is the autonomy of parents to raise their children to adulthood, the second is the value placed on having an integrated society.;In attempting to answer how society might choose between these two values, the more appropriate answer, both within public schools, and in a system of education including private schools, is to expand parental choice and control at the school level. This will lead to increasing diversity and innovation in education, and will enhance the modern notion of community that seems to have been lost in the current public education system.
