Publisher's Synopsis

These 7-volumes are part of a sub-series that aims to reprint a wide selection of the work of early European and American linguists on the languages of China, with particular reference to the lexicography of Chinese dialects as well as to the developing tradition of nineteenth-century linguistic description. This set comprises four important dictionaries published by three influential Protestant missionary linguists: Robert Morrison (1782-1834), Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884), and Ernest John Eitel (1838-1908).

Volume 1: Robert Morrison's Vocabulary of the Canton Dialect

Volumes 2-3: Samuel Wells Williams's A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect

Volumes 4-5: Ernest John (Johann) Eitel's A Chinese-English Dictionary in the Cantonese Dialect

Volumes 6-7: Samuel Wells Williams's A Syllabic Dicionary of the Chinese Language

All four dictionaries are also available separately.
