Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from China and Its People
The provincial capitals contain on an average about a million of inhabitants each; the F u cities, or those of the second class, are considerably smaller; while the cities of the third class contain generally a few tens of thousands. All the names found on our largest maps of China are the names of these walled cities. These cities alone, which number in the aggregate more than one thousand seven hundred, contain a population of not less than sixty millions.
