Clement Attlee's copies, presented to him by various colleagues, who have signed on the flyleaf (below the date, 3.10.46, during the early years of his premiership): Frederick Montague, Arthur Greenwood, Oliver Baldwin, Valentine McEntee, Harry Wallace, Alex Anderson, Frank Soskice, William Cluse - these the 'kind friends in the Socialist movement' referred to by Attlee in his 'Pleasure of Books' article for the National and English Review in 1954, where he mentions the 'high place assigned' to Morris on his shelves.Morris said of this edition 'When you come to look at it, and see that you get a book like this... for seven and sixpence a volume[!], it would be impossible to refuse buying them. I love my books, and I love making them, and I think of these... quite the most charming things issued from my press' (Ideal Book).

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 600 SETS (from an edition of 612 sets) printed on handmade paper in black and red in the Chaucer typeface, woodcut title and borders to vol. I and woodcut initial letters to both vols, erratum-slip tipped in at the end of vol. I as called for, a very faint spot at head of last couple of leaves in vol. II, pp. [iv], 256; [ii], 239, 16mo, original quarter holland linen with blue boards, the linen browned and spotted with some light wear, a touch of wear at corners and light handling to boards, edges untrimmed and lightly spotted, bookplate of Clement Attlee to front pastedown (see below), good
