This three volume work brings together a comprehensive view of chess history mostly from writings in Arabic and Hebrew. It includes translations and commentaries, illustrations, reproductions from manuscripts, pictures of chess pieces and early chess problems.;Volume two, "Chess - Its Origin" includes translation with commentary of Latin and Hebrew texts and takes the most seminal early work published by Thomas Hyde, chief librarian of the Bodleian Library in 1694. Hyde translated Arabic and Hebrew commentaries into Latin. Victor Keats translates these into English and illustrates his work from period literature and iconography.
