Moisture content was determined by drying to constant weight in a forced-air oven at 65 C, and ash in the ground tissue was estimated by heating in platinum crucibles at 500° 5500 C for 4 hours. Hydrogen-ion concentration (ph) was determined with glass electrode on aqueous extracts obtained by homogenizing fresh tissue in recently boiled distilled water.
