It is a natural and generous wish that il lustrions men, the ornaments of their several ages and countries, whom Nature, by en dowing with kindred minds and her highest intellectual gifts, would seem to have destined for friends, should have been acquainted with each other; and that the admiration in spired by their respective Works should have been warmed and strengthened by personal afi'ection. This universal feeling j ustifies more attention to the supposed friendship of Chau cer and Petrarch than a merely speculative question would otherwise deserve.
