Could of been that the characters in this story traversed unbeknownst to them into an alternate multiverse. Who knows? That fact of the matter is... or at least to the extent of their knowledge is that they traversed between worlds with one significant difference in the underlying physics... gravity. The world introduced in this first book, this world they will eventually leave consists of approximately one tenth of our gravity.
