Publisher's Synopsis
Charles Babbage lived from 1791 to 1871. He was an inventor, reformer, mathematician, philosopher, scientist, outspoken critic of the scientific establishment, raconteur, traveller, political economist, socialite, one-time politician, incorrigible rationalist, visionary, and a prolific writer. Today he is more widely known for his work on calculating engines. This book has been prepared as part of the 1991 Babbage celebration, an occasion when the Science Museum's own Babbage artefacts and archives were supplements with additional material from overseas for a special Bicentenary Exhibition.
