Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Characteristics of Owners of Thrift Deposits in Commercial Banks and Savings and Loan Associations
The recent spectacular growth of savings and loan associations and the decline in the relative importance of commercial banks as repositories for thrift funds has prompted major studies of the strengths and weaknesses of the two institutions. 2 Results of these studies indicate that commercial banks are at a competitive disadvantage because of some of their own operating con ventions and certain policies of regulatory bodies. In addition, some of the studies suggest that aggressive marketing on the part of savings and loan associ ations and important changes in consumer preferences and perceptions have been instrumental factors in the shift of importance of the two institutions.
