Excerpt from Chapters on Man: With the Outlines of a Science of Comparative Psychology
The Anthropological Society of London last year; whilst Chapters V. And VI. Contain a further development of a subject which was there slightly touched on. These two chapters may appear to be of a disproportionate length, as compared with others treating of subjects equally important; but this was unavoidable, owing to their consisting chie?y of facts, which might indeed have been considerably increased in number, with great advantage to the argument, had space allowed. While this volume has been passing through the press, Mr. C. Piazzi Smyth's valuable work, entitled Life and Work at the Great Pyramid, ' appeared, and it contains many facts which might have been thus used. I refer more particularly to the autumnal Festival of the Dead, ' and to the ancient Pleiades Year, ' with which it was associated, Mr. Haliburton having shown both of them to be almost universal. I may add, however, that the mystery connected with the origin of the Great Pyramid will probably find a solution very di?'eren't from that furnished by Mr. Smyth. With reference to the psychological hypothesis laid down in Part I., I regret that I have not met with Delitzsch's Psycho logie, ' the existence of which I was unfortunately not 'aware of until the publication of the Rev. J. B. Heard's work, entitled 'tripartite Nature of Man, ' which appeared while this was passing through the press.
