John Goddard reviews more than half a century of his research and campaigns within and outwith universities covering a period of pronounced changes in the world and in the ways cities and regions, as well as universities, have been governed and managed. Throughout this time his goal has been to bring about a reorientation of public policy intended to support more balanced city and regional development and to mobilise universities as key actors. This autobiographical account illustrates an enduring philosophy of inspiring individuals and institutions to radically change their thinking and actions in ways that fully recognise the importance of place - that geography matters. And that 'off the wall' ideas can be developed through research translated into public policy and then tested by local action in ways that not only contribute to policy revision, but also spark new ideas, both top down and bottom up.
