The Italian people seemed dead, but it was only in a state of lethargy, and when it awoke it once more accomplished feats that are worthy of Roman valour. So there came again, in Italy's history, a glorious epoch - the one that we Speak of as her Revival (risorgimento). It was a real revolution, truly noble in the high ideals that inspired it, in the heroic deeds that were achieved, and in the magnanimous conduct of the Italian people, which knew how to attain its purpose Without disgracing itself by unworthy violence.
