He was born in Attleborough, Mass., September 2nd, 1768. He was graduated at Brown University in 1787, made Professor of Divinity in 1791 and President in 1792, when he was also ordained pastor of the First Baptist Church, Providence, R. I. In 1802 he became President of Union College and in 1804 first President of South Carolina College, Columbia, S. C., where he continued till his death, June 4th, 1820.
