Couve était de ceux qui ne font rien a demi, et vont résolument jusqu'au bout de leur devoir. Il s'était mis au travail avec ardeur. A la fin de l'hiver de 1991 - 1902, il avait rédigé la première partie du catalogue, et l'avait soumise à l'appréciation de l'académie des Inscriptions et belles-lettres. Il y travailla pendant toute la durée de sa pension, sans toutefois que cette besogne minutieuse absorbât toute son activité.
