The Western University of Pennsylvania is the Oldest institu tion of learning, with one exception (the University of Nashville), in the United States, west Oi the Appalachian Mountain range. It came into being as the Pittsburgh Academy in the year 1786, and was formally incorporated by Act of Legislature in February, 1787. It was re-incorporated as the Western University of Pennsylvania in February, 1819. It has educated in whole or in part more than six thousand Of the young men of Western Pennsylvania and adja cent States, and its alumni have filled many of the most distin guished offices in the gift of the Commonwealth and the nation.
