La for�t de Savigny avait �t� conc�d�e � Bernard par Raoul, seigneur de Foug�res, afin qu'il s'y �tablit avec ses moines. C'�tait un sol fertile, arros� par de nombreux ruisseaux: les compagnons de Bernard s'y construisirent une habitation, et l�, ils pass�rent plusieurs ann�es, vivant du travail de leurs mains. Mais Vital de �tait venu rejoindre son ami et s'�tait install� avec ceux qui le suivaient �.environ deux stades de l'habitation de Bernard. On s'occupait de d�frichements, de travaux d'agriculture on recevait chaque jour de nouvelles recrues bient�t l'espace manqua aux deux colonies. On commen�a par fonder d'autres �tablissements dans le voisinage des premiers mais personne ne voulait s'�loigner des v�n�r�s Bernard et Vital: il ne fallait r1en moins que l'obe1ssance passive impos�e aux disciples pour les d�cider �. Vivre dans une autre habitation que leurs ma�tres. Bernard comprit qu'il valait mieux se s�parer.
