Publisher's Synopsis

Gregorio del Olmo Lete examines the history and character of Canaanite religion based on the evidence from Ugarit (Ras Shamra) in ancient Syria. He describes the pantheon as well as the liturgy of the religion of Ugarit as they appear in the mythological and cultic texts. The main focus is on the role of the kings, both during their reigns and in the afterlife as divinized rulers and heroes within the funerary cult of the palace. In addition, a study of Ugaritic letters, prayers, incantations and personal names has made it possible to provide a detailed description of the religion of everyday life. The study has been completely revised and enlarged and is now supplemented by numerous photos of the texts under discussion.
