Publisher's Synopsis

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the herpes viridae family, is recognized as one of the most significant viral pathogens following organ transplantation. Although generally benign in immunocompetent individuals, this virus represents a serious threat to immunocompromised patients, particularly kidney transplant recipients. The main aim of this study is to determine the frequency of CMV infection in correlation with epidemiological characteristics, while assessing its impact on renal graft rejection.Renal transplantation, although a major advance in the treatment of end-stage renal failure, exposes patients to an increased risk of viral infections, particularly CMV. Because of the need for immunosuppression to prevent graft rejection, kidney transplant patients become more vulnerable to opportunistic infections such as CMV. Reactivation or primary infection with CMV can have serious consequences, ranging from subclinical viremic disease to severe forms such as CMV pneumonia or colitis.
