Publisher's Synopsis
This is a collection of papers presented at a workshop which discussed the gaps between chemistry and biology, attempting to define real problems for further research. The meeting was attended by international specialists from different fields, including analytical chemistry, speciation, environmental chemistry, biochemistry, ecotoxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity, short-term testing and risk assessment. Topics covered include the analytical chemistry and speciation of air particulates, water sediments, soils, food and tissues; uptake by plants, mosses and lichens, including biomonitoring techniques; and the uptake and biological effects of chromium, nickel, cadmium and aluminium compounds, looking in detail at transformations that take place in living organisms to make effects in cells and tissues possible.
