Publisher's Synopsis
Against the background of changes that have occurred since their creation 50 years ago, this paper surveys issues concerning the future of the Bretton Woods Institutions: the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The report is in four sections: Part I provides a background; Part II examines systemic and the changing roles of the institutions in the international system; Part III deals with their influence on developing countries, particularly the effects of their adjustment programmes; and Part IV looks forward, to changes that should be introduced to improve the existing system.
