The subsequent background studies explore the critical issues of democratisation, human rights and gender roles in today's Middle East; current diplomatic activity in the region; emerging alternative security strategies; and economic development issues. The closing section looks to the future, identifying the many resources in civil society for building a peaceful culture that can sustain workable sociopolitical structures.
