As a scout for the U.S. Army, he played a key role in the Indian Wars, earning the respect of generals like Phil Sheridan through courage and skill. At the same time, he cemented his reputation as one of the most accomplished buffalo hunters of his time, supplying railroad crews with meat across the frontier.
But Cody's life as a frontiersman was only one side of his story. His early steps into the spotlight began through a collaboration with writer Ned Buntline, whose dramatizations of Cody's exploits brought him to the stages of the East Coast and helped shape his legend in the Wild West. Yet even as fame grew, personal tragedy struck - most painfully in the loss of his son, Kit Carson.
