Autumn is the first book in a series about two sets of brothers growing up without their parents in mid-80s South Dakota. Ramsey Wade is a neglected and abused 14 year-old. When his mentally ill brother Carl allows him to go to school for the first time, the young teen struggles to figure out life beyond the narrow world of his own home. In orchestra he meets Jeff Lofton, youngest of the five Lofton brothers. As the two boys become friends, Ramsey is drawn into life with the Loftons and finds it harder to keep the secrets of his own family.
