This is an introduction to the principal languages spoken by people of South Asian origin living in Britain. It is intended to assist people in Britain whose work involves them with speakers of these languages, and who are hoping to acquire some knowledge of the languages, or at least to understand some of the linguistic habits of their speakers.;The approach is descriptive and practical, seeking not to teach the languages themselves, but to give linguistic, geographical and historical background information which may lead to a deeper appreciation of the languages and their speakers.;The topics covered are the Indo-European connection, linguistic background and characteristics, socio-historical background and present-day status, and South African languages in the British context.
