Publisher's Synopsis
Bring sixpence and a plate is a collection of true accounts from Beryl Ruth's time teaching cookery in Secondary Modern Schools and Grammar Schools during the war years; a time when food was rationed and classrooms were badly equipped for the large amount of pupils. Ruth taught from 1946 - 1980, mainly in the Potteries but in Shropshire for the last eight years. She held posts as Head of Department and Faculty as well as being an examiner for O-levels with the AEB and Northern Board. Later in her career, Ruth was Chief Examiner for Lancashire and for the West Midlands - setting the exam papers for the CSE as it was then.
